As you move up the scale from flat to glossy, the shine in your interior paint increases. Flat, or matte paint, has no shine at all and a glossy paint has a very noticeable shine and will clearly reflect the light in the room. The general rule of thumb for selecting your finish is that the more shine the finish has, the more durable it is. So, before you select your finish, consider how much shine you both want and need for your paint job. What do you prefer as far as gloss goes and how often do you see yourself wiping your wall paint?

Here’s what our professional painters have to say about selecting the best interior paint finish for the walls and trim of your Philadelphia, PA home:

Flat– This no-gloss, chalky paint finish is easy to apply but difficult to clean and will absorb light while hiding any imperfections in your walls. It is generally used on ceilings and in (non-kid) bedrooms where the only cleaning your walls will need is occasional dusting.

Eggshell– Taking the shine up a very small notch, eggshell is far more wipeable than flat paint and is a good choice for hallways, dining rooms and surfaces that may need the occasional wipe-down.

Semi-Gloss– Semi-gloss paint has a noticeable shine, especially in rooms that offer a lot of natural light. It is a great choice for kid’s bedrooms, kitchens and other areas that may come in contact with muddy handprints, crayon marks or peanut butter. In other words, it will hold up to a routine wiping and light scrubbing.

Satin– Very similar to semi-gloss in the shine department, satin paint offers durability accompanied by a lovely pearl finish. It is highly resistant to mildew and can hold up to the same wear and tear as semi-gloss, so feel free to use it in mudrooms and kid spaces as well.

High-Gloss– Shine on. If you like a rich, glossy finish then this is the paint for you. Not only does high-gloss protect your walls, but it increases the vibrancy of your colors. The drawback here is that if your walls have any imperfections, glossy paint will accentuate it without mercy. This makes it a great choice for trim, bathrooms and kitchen cabinets.
